Alternative schoolies volunteers do conservation work in Thailand

Alternative Schoolies Volunteer Work in Thailand

Work alongside other volunteers to conserve the environment and care for children

At a glance

Take an Alternative Schoolies volunteer trip to Thailand, and seize the opportunity to travel and give back at the same time over your school-leaving holiday. You’ll split your time between childcare and marine conservation work, and work with a group your own age. Throughout it all, Projects Abroad staff will be by your side.

Your first week on this project is all about marine conservation. You’ll get your PADI diving qualification, and work with dedicated conservationists. You’ll also help raise awareness about environmental issues affecting Thailand, and get your hands dirty planting mangroves.

You’ll spend your second week in kindergartens and daycare centres, supporting the work of local teachers and caregivers. Your focus will be on helping the children learn through play, and doing renovation work.

You’ll be based in Ao Nang, and stay with your group in a shared lodge. When you’re not working, we have plenty of fun events organised for you to enjoy, along with an exciting weekend trip.

Is Alternative Schoolies volunteer work in Thailand right for me?

Are you curious about other cultures and enjoy the antics of little ones? Do you care about the ocean and protecting marine environments? Then you will have the time of your life as a Care & Conservation schoolies volunteer in Thailand!

If you have a healthy dose of wanderlust, this project is the perfect opportunity to travel safely. It’s also a great way to gain childcare and conservation experience, which could help your future studies, and eventual career. And the best part? You’ll become part of our ongoing efforts to support children’s education and protect marine environments in Thailand.

You don’t need experience for this project, as our staff will there to guide you every step of the way. A willingness to help, learn, and explore is all we ask of you! Within a week, you’ll receive your PADI Open Water course qualification, so you can dive and help with underwater work. Our diving instructors will be with you throughout the training and during each dive.

We also have an itinerary set up for your time in Thailand, ensuring you get the most out of your time here. During the weekend your schedule will allow lots of time for adventure, culture and tourism, as well as exploring Ao Nang and its sandy beaches. All of these activities take place in a group and under supervision of local Projects Abroad staff members.

What will I do on this project?

Your time will be split between working with children, and doing conservation activities. You can expect to get involved with specific tasks such as:

  • Help teachers arrange and run educational activities
  • Take part in survey dives with professional divers
  • Participate on beach clean-ups along the coast
  • Plant mangroves as part of reforestation efforts
  • Explore Thailand and learn more about the culture with your fellow volunteers

Volunteer work with children in Thailand for Schoolies will mainly focus on:

Educational activities

The care centres we partner with in Thailand need extra support in order to give each child more attention. You will be an extra pair of hands and eyes, helping caregivers reach more children throughout the day.

You will also do activities like:

  • Help children learn English through songs, games, and flashcards
  • Organise arts and crafts to encourage their creativity
  • Play sports to get kids active and work on hand-eye coordination
  • Read to children to help improve literacy
  • Ensure the children practice good hygiene

Your Projects Abroad supervisor will have loads of activity ideas to share with you. Plus you can brainstorm with fellow volunteers to come up with new ones of your own. You will also have the local teachers supervising and helping you.

Learn to dive and then take part in survey dives with professional divers

You’ll start this project by learning to scuba dive. You get a PADI Open Water course qualification included in the price, and training from our qualified instructors. You’ll learn:

  • Underwater sign language
  • Correct breathing techniques
  • How to clear your mask
  • The importance of equalising pressure

Once these skills are mastered, your volunteer conservation work in Thailand for Schoolies begins!

As you gently drift past coral and shoals of fish, you will record what you see and add your findings to our database. The information you gather is shared with national parks, helping meet long-term goals. You’ll also help gather data about general reef health. This is critical work, as coral reefs are known to house the largest diversity of marine life.

Beach clean-ups along Ao Nang’s coastline

Thousands of cigarette butts alone litter Ao Nang’s beaches. These small discarded items kill local marine and plant life. And they’re only one example of the kind of litter that can be found on one of Thailand’s beaches.

You and your fellow volunteers will walk along beach coastlines, collecting and disposing of rubbish that is found. Data from these clean-ups is then shared with the local authorities. It shows them why we need regular and proper waste management in the area.

Plant and transplant mangroves as part of reforestation efforts

Dig your hands into muddy coastlines for a good cause. By helping plant and move mangroves, you’re working towards long-term conservation efforts in the region.

Mangrove forests are among the most productive and bio-diverse wetlands on earth. However, these coastal forests are among the most threatened habitats. Each mangrove you plant in the mud or move to a better area, helps the mangrove forests survive.

Exploring Thailand

Finally, this project is also an opportunity for you to travel, learn, and grow in a safe environment. During your evenings and over weekends, under the supervision of our staff, we will help you learn more about Thailand’s culture, and explore some of the areas most unique attractions.

Where in Thailand will I work?

Ao Nang

You’ll be based in Ao Nang near Krabi. This area, located a short one-hour flight south of Bangkok, is a combination of dramatic limestone backdrops, waving palms, white sand beaches, and crystal clear waters.

Ao Nang also marks the centre of tourism in the Krabi province. Your short-term project will be spent here with a group of volunteers, and in the Andaman Sea when you’re diving.

Weekends are jam-packed with cultural and adventure activities. These include a kayak trip and a visit to the local market.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Thailand Arrival Procedures page.

What are the aims of this project?

This project has two main aims. We want to support the work of local teachers and caregivers in disadvantaged areas, and we want to protect and preserve local marine environments.

In Thailand, the care centres and kindergartens where we work need helping hands, as teachers and caregivers often struggle to give enough attention to each. You’ll support their work by helping the children learn through play and running fun activities. You’ll also make sure that the children practice good hygiene everyday, which helps keep them healthy.

At our Conservation Project, you’ll become part of our efforts to protect and preserve marine environments. Through survey dives, you’ll add vital data to our databases, which we share with local NGOs, the national park, and the local government. You’ll plant mangroves to help protect coastlines from erosion and offset carbon emissions.

Creating spaces for cultural exchange and growth for you is another important reason we run this project. During your time in Thailand, you’ll learn about the local culture first-hand by living and working closely with communities there.

Join us as a Care & Conservation schoolies volunteer in Thailand and learn more about a new culture while helping educate local children, and protecting marine life.

Management plans

We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.

Measuring our impact

Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

Food and accommodation

You'll share accommodation with other Projects Abroad volunteers and interns during your stay in Ao Nang. This is a great way to get to know your fellow volunteers and interns, share experiences, and explore your surroundings in your free time together.

The accommodation is safe, clean, and comfortable. Your programme fees include three meals a day.

Safety and staff support

Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have all the extra support you need as a young person travelling abroad. Our Projects Abroad staff are there for you 24 hours a day during the week and over weekends to provide constant support and guidance. Our staff also make sure you feel comfortable and safe at your placement and accommodation. If you encounter any problems, they will be available to help at any time.
