Is this trip to Belize right for me?
If sun, sea and sand is your life motto then a Discovery Tour is right up your alley. You’ll spend a week exploring this Central American country with an itinerary filled with exploration, culture and plenty of Garifuna food. Our local guides will open your eyes to a land you wish you’d visited sooner.
This Discovery Tour is open to anyone over the age of 18 years old. You are also required to have at least a decent level of fitness due to the nature of some of the hikes and other activities on your itinerary.
During your stay, you’ll be living in hotels with the rest of your groups. Your accommodations embody the Garifuna culture, and you’ll have lush green forests and crystal clear waters right on your doorstep. You’ll also stay in shared accommodations during the time you spend on our Conservation Project in Placencia.
Day 1 – Arrival in Belize City
The moment you land in Belize, our staff will be by your side. They’ll collect you from the airport and take you directly to your accommodation in Belize City. Depending on the time you arrive, you might be able to explore the surrounding area or have a rest before the rest of your group arrives.
Once everyone has arrived, you’ll receive a full country, safety and cultural induction. This will prepare you for the week ahead and it will give you and your group the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. You’ll end off a long day of travelling with a hearty team dinner. Use this opportunity to get to know each other and interact with the rest of your group.
Day 2 – Tour of Belize City
After a restful night's sleep, you'll wake up to a Garifuna inspired breakfast. Think all things tropical, like fresh fruit and banana fritters, some egg and possibly a seafood or two.
Once you’re fuelled up for the day, you’ll take a tour of Belize City. You’ll walk passed colonial buildings and through dirt streets. You’ll visit seaside parks and contemporary galleries with art that will pull you in. And don’t forget to stop off at a few of the bustling shopping areas that come alive with cultural vibrancy. You might even get to pick up a souvenir or two while you’re there.
Day 3 – Hol Chan Marine Reserve
After breakfast, you’ll head off to Hol Chan Marine Reserve where you’ll spend the day in the crystal clear waters. When you aren’t snorkelling around the corals of the barrier reef, you’ll get to tuck into a delicious lunch of garnaches. Embrace the simplicity of a day on the beach while soaking up the sun and enjoying the warm waters.
Day 4 – San Ignacio and Cahal Pech
Today, you’ll travel to San Ignacio which is the heart and soul of the Cayo District. You’ll experience the positive and infectious city vibe as you explore the bustling open-air market, sample the local cuisine and walk alongside the Macal River.
Once the city gets too much, you’ll head off into more natural areas as you hike towards the fascinating Cahal Pech. You’ll travel through the cool jungle to get to this incredible Mayan ruin where a guide will share its incredible story.
Day 5 – Green iguana conservation project, NoHoch Che’en Caves and Xunantunich
You’ll have a busy day ahead in the lush Macal Valley. You’ll follow the jungle trail that winds through the trees to the Green Iguana Conservation Project. There, you’ll get up close and personal with the iguanas and find out more about their life cycle and habits. You’ll learn how the eggs are collected and hatched, then cared for until the reptiles are released into the wild.
After a morning of teachings, you’ll get to relax as you float through the depths of the NoHoch Che’en Caves. The caves are peppered with stalactites, stalagmites, and Mayan artefacts - a joy for adventurers. You’ll finish off your trip with a trek to Xunantunich. This enchanting Maya archaeological site is something to behold and has plenty of stories waiting for you to discover.
Day 6 – Jaguar Sanctuary, Barrier Reef Conservation Project and Garifuna cooking class
Your day will start at Cockscomb Basin where you’ll visit the world’s first Jaguar Sanctuary. You’ll be in awe at these majestic big cats.
You’ll then head to Placencia where you’ll join our Belize Barrier Reef Conservation Project. You’ll learn about our plans to protect marine life and get involved in the data collection of different species.
For dinner, you’ll be in for a treat. Prepare yourself for a traditional Garifuna dinner using only local ingredients. You and your group will eat together with the sea breeze lulling you into the evening.
Day 7 – Departure from Belize City
You’ll wake up to the sounds of crashing waves on our Barrier Reef Conservation Project. You’ll start the day with a data collection dive in the warm waters that will contribute to government conservation policies.
