Volunteer on our Medicine High School Special in the Philippines and increase your medical knowledge while getting practical experience through community outreaches. This is a great opportunity to learn about how medical practices in the Philippines differ from your home country.
Our Medicine programme takes you to a local hospital where you observe doctors and nurses and gain experience in different areas by rotating between departments. These departments include rural health units, dentistry and obstetrics wards, a dispensary and treatment unit, and a laboratory. Depending on availability of staff where your group is placed, you could also sit in during consultations, learn more about the records department, and spend time in a nutrition unit.
Dengue fever and non-communicable diseases like diabetes and heart disease are a big problem in the Philippines. There are very few clinics and healthcare centres in rural areas, so volunteers have an important role to play with teaching communities how to prevent diseases. In order to help alleviate the healthcare problems in the Philippines, help plan and lead educational workshops on health and hygiene, and participate in medical outreaches in remote areas under the guidance of our staff.
You will live with a host family and enjoy authentic Filipino cuisine every day. During your free time with your host family, you can chat, play games with other volunteers staying there, and learn about Filipino culture. Over the weekend, you will take a trip to Capitancillo Islet, a small coral island near Bogo. Spend your time snorkelling, visiting the protected marine sanctuary, and relaxing on the beach with the friends you make during your trip.
