Volunteering on an International Development Placement
Volunteers work at NGOs involved in some of the following areas:
Transport and mobility – Volunteers can get involved in fundraising tasks, promoting and planning different campaigns to encourage the use of bicycles in the city, this will involve using social media and the local press.
Immigrants (travellers crossing through Mexico to get to the United States) - This NGO gives support to immigrants by giving food, clothes and shelter. The NGO needs volunteers to help with promotion, fundraising, and helping out at the shelter giving out or collecting food and clothes. Volunteers may also assist by interviewing the immigrants, collecting data and getting statements about human rights violations that have taken place in Mexico. This project includes some journalism work, helping to write press releases and running social media campaigns.
Human rights - We work with the Guadalajara branch of a global NGO focusing on human rights. Volunteers will assist staff with communication and publicity work, as well as planning for peaceful demonstrations or other events. There is a particular need for volunteers will skills in video editing and social media.
- Women's rights - Yhis NGO focuses on the empowerment of women in marginalised communities. Volunteers are needed to help with fundraising, translation and educational workshops. We are also looking for volunteers with business experience to help these women design and implement small business plans to operate within their communities.
Whichever NGO you work at you should show a high level of motivation and a willingness to participate in any task given to you, whether it is as organising a new campaign or spending a few hours translating or editing a project proposal. By working within many areas of the organisation, you'll gain a well-rounded view of how international development charities work and the unique set of challenges they face in achieving their goals.
The placements will accept anyone who is motivated to get involved and help, but these projects are particularly suitable for students and recent graduates of business and development studies. Please let us know if you have any experience or a special interest in any particular area.
