Is volunteer community work in Fiji for teenagers right for me?

This project is perfect for teenagers who enjoy working with children. You’ll also do community work, and use your own two hands to paint a classroom or build playground equipment. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain childcare experience. You’ll also be able to add new skills like teamwork and leadership to your CV.

You don’t need any qualifications or experience to join. This project is specifically designed for teenagers, and Projects Abroad staff are there to support and guide you at all times.

This trip takes place over fixed dates, and you can choose the one that best fits your schedule. We’ve also organised various cultural and social events for your group, so you’ll have plenty to keep you busy. Our staff will also take you on a sightseeing trip over the weekend.

What will I do as a volunteer in Fiji?

You’ll work with a group of teenagers your age to support the community and help children learn through play. These are some ways you can help, learn, and explore in Fiji:

  • Work with children on their development and encourage learning through play
  • Do community work to create long-lasting resources for local people
  • Work with teenagers from around the world and explore Fiji together

Your work will focus on the following main tasks:

Work with children

As a volunteer in Fiji, most of your time will be spent working in the care centre. Here, you will help plan and run educational activities and games for the children. This would include playing ball games to help improve hand-eye coordination and doing crafts to help encourage creativity.

By doing this, you will assist local leaders in creating an environment where children can learn important lessons through play.

Do community work

Even though most of your time will be spent with children, you’ll also do renovation and maintenance work in the community. The kind of work you do will depend greatly on what the need in the community is at the time, but you can definitely expect to get your hands dirty and go home with some paint splatters on your clothes!

There is always a need for educational resources such as posters and flashcards at our partner care centres and schools. You and your group will have the time to get creative and make these for your placement. You may also paint classrooms or help construct playground equipment.

Work with other teenagers and explore Fiji

You’ll be volunteering with teenagers from around the world, all sharing in this exciting adventure. There will be plenty of time for you to get to know your new friends during social and cultural activities, as well as weekend trips. Our staff will be there to supervise you throughout these events.

Where you will be working as a volunteer in Fiji

Pacific Harbour

On this project, you’ll be based in Pacific Harbour, known as the ‘adventure capital of Fiji’. This popular tourist area is on the south coast of Viti Levu.

In your free time, there’s plenty to do. Seeking more adrenaline? There’s kayaking, ziplining, and white water rafting. The island also has great hiking among breathtaking waterfalls and lush rainforests. If relaxing is more your thing, Pacific Harbour has some of the finest, white-sand beaches on the island.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Fiji Arrival Procedures page.

What are the aims and impact of this project?

There are two main aims of this project: to immerse yourself in a different culture and lend a helping hand at a local care centre.

The local care centre was created by Projects Abroad volunteers and the local village. It was designed to expose the children to English and provide stimulating activities before their formal education begins at kindergarten.

The village wants to eventually establish their own kindergarten so your support at the care centre will lay the foundation for this goal. Your help is needed to make learning fun and engaging.

As part of your volunteer work, you will provide support for children’s overall development. You’ll also help make care centres, kindergartens, and schools brighter, more welcoming places. You’ll become part of our long-term efforts to promote early childhood development and improve literacy.

Join this Childcare & Pacific Island Village Project designed specifically for teenagers and help support a local community while experiencing a more traditional way of life.

Management plans

We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.

Measuring our impact

Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers and interns actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work.

We produce an annual High School Specials Impact Report, which documents some of these achievements. Find out more about the impact of these projects, and read the latest report.

Food and accommodation

You'll stay with a host family in Pacific Harbour. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Fiji and have a truly unique experience.

On our trips, we will always try to have you share a room with at least one volunteer or intern of the same gender and approximate age. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.

Our Projects Abroad staff are there for you 24 hours a day during the week and over weekends to provide constant support and guidance.
