What you can expect

This programme offers a mix of real-world medical exposure with cultural immersion and adventure. You’ll begin your journey on Sri Lanka’s south coast, where our team will introduce you to local customs, the national healthcare system, and essential phrases to help you connect with patients during your placements.

Medical shadowing

Throughout your stay, you’ll shadow medical teams in both urban and rural hospitals, observing real patient care and gaining a deeper understanding of healthcare in a developing context. You can expect to rotate through various hospital settings, including:

• Emergency Treatment Unit
• Neurosurgery ward and operating theatre observation
• Palliative care unit
• Occupational Therapy department
• Hemodialysis centre

To maximise your experience, you will:

• Compile a daily journal of cases observed
• Request and review individual case histories
• Research unfamiliar medical terms and conditions encountered on the wards
• Discuss cases and clinical observations with your assigned supervisor

Public health outreach

Join community outreach campaigns to assist in delivering basic medical screenings and support to local residents while learning about public health in action.

Practical skills workshop

You will also develop essential clinical skills for your future career by engaging in practical workshops, including suturing, first aid, and injection techniques.

Cultural discovery and exploration

Beyond your clinical work, you’ll dive into Sri Lanka’s rich heritage through traditional dance and cooking classes, mask painting, and market visits to find unique souvenirs. An adventurous weekend exploring the island’s wild side and iconic landscapes will be the highlight of your journey. Rise early for a safari in Udawalawe National Park to spot elephants, leopards, crocodiles, and other native species before stopping at the legendary Ravana Falls for a photo session. After hiking to Little Adam’s Peak, embark on the iconic scenic train journey through the hills of Ella and tour a local tea plantation to see the craftsmanship behind a global export. You’ll also get the chance to see the colonial-era Nine Arch Bridge before returning to Galle.
