Mongolia Arrival Procedures

Airport pickup, flights, and visa information for your trip to Mongolia

We have all the information you need to know for your trip, from helping with visa queries to walking you through your induction on your first day in Mongolia. Our hassle-free approach means you can concentrate on what really matters, making a difference at your placement.

Arrival airport and pickup in Mongolia

You will arrive at Ulaanbaatar Airport in the early morning, where you will be greeted by a friendly member of the Projects Abroad team. They’ll be carrying clear Projects Abroad signage!

From here, you’ll be transported by car to your host family’s home. You will also receive your induction folder, which will contain all of the information you will need during your stay.

Our host families are warm, welcoming families who live in comfortable accommodation around the city of Ulaanbaatar. You are just a short bus trip from the Projects Abroad Mongolia office.

After putting down your bags and greeting your hosts, you will have the chance to sample some delicious home-cooked breakfast. Once you are settled in, our Projects Abroad staff member will leave you to get some rest.

We cover the cost of all transfers to and from the airport.

Booking your flights to Mongolia

Searching for flights online is easier than ever, but it can still be a time-consuming, overwhelming, and frustrating process. If you need support, our staff have in-depth knowledge of all our destinations. We’ll let you know which airport you’ll be flying to and recommend the best way to get there.

We can advise you on booking the best return flights, ensuring you have the safest, most convenient, and most cost-effective flight options, no matter how complex your travel plans are. Find out more about the flight booking process.

Visas requirements for your volunteer project or internship in Mongolia

One of the perks of volunteering with us is the visa guidance we give you. We have a dedicated visa team who have up-to-date information on visa requirements for all of our destinations around the world. You can get in touch with us if you have any visa queries, big or small, and we will talk you through the process. Once you apply, you’ll also get a link to your own MyProjectsAbroad web page, which will include all the necessary visa information.

Your induction and orientation in Mongolia

After a well-deserved rest, you should wake up feeling refreshed and excited for your first day in Mongolia! You will be picked up by a member of staff, and taken on a guided tour of the city. First up, you will be shown where the post office and nearest internet cafes are, as well as any important landmarks. You can also buy a local SIM card.

Next, you will be taken to the Projects Abroad office, where you will be introduced to the local staff. Here, you’ll be shown around, and we’ll explain how we run our programmes in Mongolia. This is a good time to ask questions and raise any concerns you may have.

After the orientation, we’ll take you to see some interesting museums, and we’ll go to a local monastery to visit the monks.

If you arrive on a weekday, your induction will begin the following day. If you arrive over the weekend, your induction will take place on a Monday.

Your first day at your volunteer or internship placement in Mongolia

On your first day, you will travel via bus to your placement, accompanied by a Projects Abroad staff member. You will be shown around the facilities, and introduced to the placement supervisor and your new colleagues.

You won’t be expected to dive straight into work, and you’ll be given plenty of time to understand what is required of you. You will be told what your responsibilities are, as well as what your schedule will look like. You’ll only start your project work the next day.

Support, safety, and backup

Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on-hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement. If you encounter any problems, they will be available to help at any time.
