Volunteer Building Projects Abroad

Projects Abroad volunteers building houses overseas

Some of the most important work that needs to be done in developing communities is the construction of basic infrastructure. Helping communities in this way lays a foundation that allows them to continue with building efforts even after your volunteer work has ended, ensuring that projects are sustainable and aid development.

Our building projects really allow volunteers to be immersed in the local community. Volunteers stay with a host family and work with community members and organisations to ensure that projects are completed and match the needs of the people they’re benefitting.

Building volunteers can work in a variety of destinations, contributing to all types of sustainable projects. Whether you want to experience rural life in Ghana or work in the heart of a South African township, there are different options for you to get the most out of your building work.

Which Destinations Offer Building Projects?

Projects Abroad supports a vast range of community building and development projects, varying in nature from country to country. You can choose to do a building placement in the following destinations:

What Kind of Building Work will I be Doing?

Volunteers on an overseas Building project have the chance to contribute to the construction of a worthwhile community building, in an area in which it is truly needed. Volunteers will be involved in constructing much-needed spaces, such as permanent housing, schools and community centres. Building projects are a collaborative effort – volunteers will work with local tradesmen and community leaders as part of a valuable team.

Donal Egan, Building volunteer in Ghana"It was hands on, dirty and often tough but all the more rewarding for it, and I would happily do it again. The work ranged from making mortar and bricks, to building foundations, floors, walls, windows, doors and roofs, and with the process being so quick, it never felt like a dull day on site."

What are the Requirements for Volunteering in a Building Project?

Volunteers do not need any previous building experience, as you will be taught all the necessary skills by local professionals. You should be physically fit and willing to work hard in order to take part in these projects. Volunteers should also be flexible and open to new ways of working, as resources may be limited and work schedules may change according to the climate.

Building project volunteers with a hard-working and positive attitude will ensure that community buildings will benefit from better quality construction. Building placements are open to volunteers of any age who are willing to work hard, get their hands dirty and be part of a valuable contribution to the community.
