The Maldives Arrival Procedures

Airport pickup, flights, and visas for your trip to the Maldives

We have all the information you need to know for your trip, from helping with visa queries to walking you through a placement induction on your first day. Our hassle-free approach means you can concentrate on what really matters: gaining valuable experience and exploring this incredible island nation.

Arrival Airport and Transfer to Naifaru

You'll arrive at Velana International Airport in Malé, the capital of the Maldives. Our team will then coordinate your onward transfer to Naifaru Island in Lhaviyani Atoll. Depending on your arrival time, you will either:

  • Domestic Flight: Take a domestic flight from Malé to Madivaru Airport, with flights operating twice daily. From Madivaru, it's a short 10-minute boat ride to Naifaru.
  • Seaplane: Alternatively, travel directly to a nearby resort by seaplane, offering beautiful views of the atolls and islands along the way.

The local team will coordinate your transfer and meet you upon arrival in Male. The cost of transportation from the airport to Naifaru is covered by your program fees.

Booking Your Flights to the Maldives

Searching for flights online is easier than ever, but it can still be a time-consuming, overwhelming, and frustrating process. If you need support, our staff have in-depth knowledge of travelling to the Maldives. We'll let you know the best arrival times and recommend the most convenient flight options.

We can advise you on booking the best return flights, ensuring you have the safest, most convenient, and most cost-effective flight options, no matter how complex your travel plans are. We recommend booking a morning domestic flight on arrival and an evening flight on your departure day to maximise your time on the island.

Visa Requirements for Your Volunteer Project or Internship in the Maldives

One of the perks of volunteering with us is the visa guidance we give you. We have a dedicated visa team with up-to-date information on visa requirements. You can get in touch with us if you have any visa queries, big or small, and we will talk you through the process.

Visa Information:

  • Stays up to 30 days: Most visitors receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Malé Airport. No pre-arrangement is necessary.
  • Stays longer than 30 days: If you are staying for more than 30 days, our team will apply for the necessary visa extension on your behalf, ensuring it's ready for your arrival.

We handle all visa applications for extended stays, making the process smooth and stress-free for you.

Accommodation in Malé (Optional)

If you need to stay overnight in Malé before or after your volunteer placement, we are happy to organise accommodation at a local guesthouse for you. The cost of accommodation in Malé is not included in the program fees and will be paid directly to the hotel upon arrival.

Your Induction and Orientation in Naifaru

On the morning of your first full day in Naifaru, a staff member will pick you up for a comprehensive orientation and walking tour of the island. You will be shown around the community and given an introduction to life on this vibrant local island.

Your orientation will include:

  1. How to navigate the island on foot and by bicycle
  2. Location of essential services:
    • Banks and ATM (note: ATM charges approximately $5 per withdrawal)
    • Shops and local markets
    • Cafés and restaurants
    • Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital and pharmacy
    • Project headquarters and marine centre
    • Emergency services
  3. An overview of local customs and cultural etiquette
  4. Information about the upcoming schedule and activities

You will also hear more about how we run our programs and what to expect during your placement. This way, you can feel fully prepared and confident for your upcoming experience in the Maldives.

Your First Day at Your Volunteer Placement

Your first day will serve as an introductory day. You'll walk to your placement with a staff member. You will be shown what you need to do and how to get there. All of your work-related transportation costs will be covered by the program.

Once you reach your placement, you'll be shown around and get an introduction to how things are run.

For marine conservation placements, you'll meet our resident marine biologists and learn about turtle rehabilitation, coral restoration, and reef monitoring procedures.

Support, Safety, and Backup

Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. The local staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement. If you encounter any problems, they will be available to help at any time.

Additionally, all marine activities including diving, snorkelling, and turtle rehabilitation work are conducted under strict safety protocols with certified marine biologists, instructors, and proper equipment maintenance checks. We maintain close relationships with Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital and local emergency services to ensure rapid response if needed.
